Buy Twitter Handle or Username? What X Allows and Bans

The only permitted way to buy Twitter handle rights is the X Handle Marketplace, where eligible Premium subscribers request inactive names at handles.x.com. X approves or denies each request, charges a transfer price for some names, and grants a revocable licence instead of ownership. Private deals are different: X's username squatting policy says buying or selling usernames may bring permanent suspension (X Help Center, checked October 13, 2026).

Phone with a blank profile handle, a price tag and coins on a table, the picture people have when they buy Twitter handle rights.

What X's rules say before you buy a Twitter handle

Every Twitter handle, now an X username, is a unique @name of 5 to 15 characters that sits in a profile URL and logs the account in. X lends it; users do not own it. Its Handle Marketplace help page says an approved requester receives a "limited, revocable, and non-transferable license" and that X owns all handles (X Help Center, checked October 13, 2026). So can you buy a Twitter handle? Yes, from X and from nobody else. Under the username squatting policy, attempts to sell, buy or solicit payment for usernames are violations that may end in permanent suspension (X username squatting policy, checked October 13, 2026). Anyone who searches "buy twitter handle" is therefore choosing between one sanctioned request form and a private market that the rules close to buyer and seller alike.

Enforcement lands on the account, not the payment, which sends suspended buyers to how to unsuspend x account guides; learning to avoid getting banned on twitter first is cheaper.

Your Reputation Solution is an account recovery and reputation management firm that helps people regain locked profiles and report impersonation. Handle sales sit outside that work: we broker no names and hold no escrow.

How to buy a Twitter handle through the X Handle Marketplace

Buying from X is a request, not a checkout; the twitter handle marketplace guide explains each tier.

Five-step path showing how to buy a Twitter handle through the X Handle Marketplace, from plan badge to approved name.
  1. Subscribe to Premium+, Premium Business or Premium Organizations, or a Premium, Super or Ultra plan on The X Subscription.
  2. Check the account: over three months old, public, in good standing, posting original content.
  3. Log in at handles.x.com and search from the account that will carry the name.
  4. Request the name and accept the Marketplace Terms.
  5. Wait at least 7 days; some names add an ID check, a written reason or a transfer price.

What does it cost to purchase Twitter handle rights this way? Many names, such as first-name-last-name combinations and multi-word business names, come as a perk of the plan. Invite-only names carry a transfer price, and X says typical fees start in the five-figure range in US dollars and reach seven figures, with every payment final and non-refundable. TechCrunch reported a lower floor of $2,500 for rare handles at launch (TechCrunch, October 20, 2025), so trust the help page today. Upkeep follows approval. Free names are reclaimed when the subscription lapses for more than 30 days. Accounts must log in from a device at least once every 30 days and keep posting. Each one gets a single transfer every six months, and people who buy X handle rights find their previous name frozen, not released.

Clear open enforcement, such as a twitter account shadow banned for spam, before trying to buy Twitter username rights, and settle "how do I delete my old Twitter account" for side profiles. Marketplace requests are one thing Your Reputation Solution does not submit for clients: X wants the form sent from the account that will use the name.

Why do buyers still chase OG and swapped Twitter handles?

Short, old names sit at the invite-only, priced end of X's listings, so demand flows to private sellers promising them cheaper.

Two profiles trading names with one broken arrow and an open padlock, the weak point when people buy OG Twitter handles.

Swaps work like this. Its holder renames the account, the name falls free, and the buyer's account claims it seconds later. X's help page explains why that window is dangerous: once a username is changed, the previous one is immediately available to someone else (X Help Center, checked October 13, 2026). Anyone watching can claim it first, scripts included. Sellers urging you to buy OG Twitter handles skip a second problem: where such names come from. In the July 2020 Twitter breach, intruders used internal tools to move accounts from rightful owners to unauthorized users, and one participant, Joseph O'Connor, got five years in prison (US Department of Justice, June 23, 2023). Bought accounts add a third. Whoever registered the account still knows its first email and phone number and can pull the login back.

Deal chats often run on Telegram, where telegram scammers reuse one fake-escrow script, and the answer to "can i report someone on telegram" is yes.

On WhatsApp you can report whatsapp scam contact number details inside the chat. Threats to leak your messages after payment are extortion, as in any sextortion scam facebook users report.

How to buy someone's Twitter handle when the account is still active

Start with what the holder is doing. If the account imitates you, a twitter account report for impersonation fits, and reporting on twitter works only when the reason matches the violation.

Clearing the holder out by force fails: paid campaigns are answered in does mass reporting work on twitter, and the lawful version of how to delete someone's twitter account runs through X's policies.

In those cases Your Reputation Solution documents and files impersonation and trademark reports; X's policy team decides, and no report hands the reporter a name.

No rule-compliant payment exists between two users, so the answer to how to buy someone's Twitter handle is that you cannot pay them for it. Three routes remain. Asking is the first: a holder may rename their account for free, although the squatting policy bars them from taking money and a freed name can be sniped. Waiting is the second. When an account goes dormant, its name may later surface in the Handle Marketplace, and X lets you register interest in some unavailable handles. Proving a right is the third, because X states it will not release squatted usernames except in cases of trademark infringement, which makes a registered mark the one ground the policy names. None of these is quick. Each leaves your account in good standing, and a private payment does not.

Is a Twitter username for sale ever a safe listing?

No private listing is safe in the way buyers mean, because X can reverse the result and the seller often can too.

Storefront card, loupe and checklist on a stone table, the checks to run on any Twitter username for sale listing.

Any "twitter username for sale" page outside handles.x.com sells one of two things: the login to an existing account, or a timed swap. Escrow and seller ratings lower the chance that a stranger vanishes with your money. They cannot change what X does afterwards. Its Authenticity policy bans trading, buying or selling access to accounts and usernames (X Authenticity policy, checked October 13, 2026). For Marketplace names the help page goes further: an attempted sale revokes the licence, the name is reclaimed without refund, the accounts involved may be suspended, and selling the whole account counts. Storefronts advertising x handles for sale in bulk deserve extra doubt, since nobody holds hundreds of names without parked accounts, the exact thing the squatting policy targets. Before you buy Twitter handles anywhere, read the second column below.

For the same reason, Your Reputation Solution will not value, list, broker or escrow a handle, and an "agent" using that name in a sale chat is an impostor.

Can I sell my Twitter handle, and what is it worth?

Under X's rules the answer is no, and a sale can cost the seller the account as well as the name.

Balance scale weighing a short name against a long one, the factors behind how much is my Twitter handle worth.

People still ask how to sell a Twitter handle, so here is what it involves. Sellers either hand over the whole login or rename the account so the buyer can grab the name. Both versions make the seller act first and trust a stranger to pay, and the squatting policy applies to that seller exactly as it applies to the buyer. How much is my Twitter handle worth? Follower calculators answer a different question. They price an audience, and an audience does not travel with a swapped name. X publishes the only price list: free for many name-style handles, five to seven figures in US dollars for invite-only ones. Private offers prove little; X also takes names unpaid. In July 2023 it took over @x with no warning or compensation (TechCrunch, July 26, 2023).

Lost a handle or money in a deal? Your Reputation Solution reviews the evidence, names the report or recovery route that fits, and says when nothing can be done. Ask for a free handle-deal review.

We never ask for a password or login code, take no payment to free a name, and promise no outcome; the limits of our work are public.

Buyers who answer a refusal with threats are harassing you. Posted lies fall under can you sue someone for slander on facebook, and Snapchat pressure under what happens if you report someone on snapchat.

Unwanted name? Rename or deactivate instead of selling. A twitter removal request fits posts about you, and remove website from google search clears an old profile URL.

What is the safe way to transfer Twitter handle rights between your own accounts?

Use two sessions: rename the old account, then claim the freed name on the second within seconds.

Two profile cards with a name moving across under a stopwatch, the timing gap when you transfer Twitter handle rights.

X has no move or merge button for standard handles, so the method leans on the release rule in its help page: a changed username is immediately available to someone else. Open account A in one browser and account B in another. On A, go to Settings and privacy, Account, Username, enter a spare name and save. Switch to B and type the original name at once. That gap is the whole risk. Strangers or scripts can take the name in between, and nothing in the help pages promises it back. Handle Marketplace names are excluded from this method. Requests must come from the account that will use the name, changing away from a Marketplace handle makes X reclaim it, and only Premium Business users are told to ask support about a new account association.

Locked-out accounts cannot rename themselves, so access comes first, the same wall as "my telegram account is banned". Closing the emptied profile is optional, as with how can i delete a snapchat account.

After a scam, report where contact began: how to report abuse on snapchat and what happens when you report a comment on facebook explain the next step.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, but only from X. The X Handle Marketplace lets eligible subscribers request inactive names at handles.x.com, and an approved request gives a limited, revocable, non-transferable licence while X keeps ownership of every handle (X Help Center, checked October 13, 2026). Any other attempt to buy Twitter handle rights, whether a swap, a bought account or a broker deal, falls under the username squatting policy, which says attempts to sell, buy or solicit payment for usernames may lead to permanent suspension. Eligibility has conditions: Premium+, Premium Business or Premium Organizations, or a Premium, Super or Ultra plan on The X Subscription, plus an account older than three months that is public, in good standing and posting original content. Your Reputation Solution does not sell or broker names; it helps with impersonation reports and account recovery, and X makes every final decision on a handle.

Log in to the account that will carry the name, open handles.x.com or the Request an inactive handle tab in Premium Hub, search, submit the request and accept the Marketplace Terms. That is the whole route for anyone who wants to purchase Twitter handle rights within the rules. X then reviews the request, and its help page says most decisions need at least 7 days; some names also require an ID check, a written explanation or a transfer price (checked October 13, 2026). If approved, X switches your username and keeps your followers, posts, DMs and settings intact, while the previous name is frozen for a period. People looking to buy X handle rights should plan for the limits as well: one transfer per account every six months, a device login at least every 30 days, and regular original posting, or X may reclaim the name without refund.

Many names cost nothing beyond the subscription. X's help page says handles such as first-name-last-name combinations and multi-word business names can come as a perk of an eligible plan, while invite-only names require a transfer price that typically starts in the five-figure range in US dollars and can reach seven figures (X Help Center, checked October 13, 2026). At launch, TechCrunch reported rare handles from $2,500 (October 20, 2025), so the published range has moved and should be rechecked before you budget. All payments are final and non-refundable. A paid name does not need the subscription kept up after transfer; a free one is reclaimed if the plan lapses for more than 30 days. Offers to buy Twitter handles for a few hundred dollars come from private sellers, and those deals sit outside the rules, with no refund route through X if the name disappears.

No. Offers to buy OG Twitter handles depend on a private seller, and swapped Twitter handles depend on a few seconds of timing. In a swap the holder renames their account and the buyer claims the freed name, but X's help page says a previous username is immediately available to someone else, so a third party can take it first. A bought account can be pulled back by whoever still controls its original email or phone number. Provenance is the other risk: after the July 2020 Twitter breach, in which intruders moved accounts from rightful owners to unauthorized users, a participant was sentenced to five years in prison (US Department of Justice, June 23, 2023). Finally, X's username squatting policy treats buying and selling usernames as violations that may bring permanent suspension, so even a deal that completes can end with the account closed.

You cannot pay the holder under X's rules, so the workable answer to how to buy someone's Twitter handle is to use a route that involves no private payment. First, check handles.x.com from your own eligible account, since inactive names are what the Handle Marketplace lists, and register interest if the name is shown as unavailable. Second, ask the holder to rename their account voluntarily; they may, but the squatting policy bars them from taking money and the freed name is open to anyone. Third, if the name matches your registered trademark, file under X's trademark policy, because X says it will not release squatted usernames except in cases of trademark infringement. Fourth, report impersonation when the account pretends to be you. Your Reputation Solution prepares the evidence for the last two routes, and X decides the result.

A Twitter username for sale on a third-party site may be a real offer from a real seller, but it is still a transaction X prohibits. Its Authenticity policy bans trading, buying or selling access to accounts and usernames, and the Handle Marketplace help page says an attempted sale of a Marketplace name revokes the licence and may get the accounts involved suspended (checked October 13, 2026). Escrow on such sites protects the payment step only. It does nothing about the seller recovering the login later or X reclaiming the name. Pages listing x handles for sale by the hundred raise a further question about where the names came from. If you have already paid, save the listing, the chat and the payment record, dispute the charge with your card issuer or payment provider, and report the seller to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Not within X's rules. The username squatting policy says attempts to sell usernames may result in permanent suspension, and a name received through the Handle Marketplace is a non-transferable licence that X reclaims without refund if you try. So guides on how to sell a Twitter handle describe a deal that puts the seller's own account at risk, usually with the seller handing over access before any money is certain. As for value, no official appraisal exists. Follower-based calculators estimate an audience, which stays with the account when a name moves. The one published reference is X's own pricing for invite-only names, which typically starts in five figures in US dollars, and X has also reassigned names without paying, as it did with @x in July 2023 (TechCrunch, July 26, 2023). If you no longer want a name, renaming or deactivating the account is the safe exit.

There is no direct button to transfer Twitter handle rights, so the usual method is release and claim. Log in to both accounts in separate browsers. On the account that holds the name, open Settings and privacy, then Account, then Username, change it to a spare name and save. Immediately enter the original name on the second account. X's help page warns that a previous username is immediately available to someone else once changed, so the name is exposed during that gap and may be lost for good. Usernames must be 5 to 15 characters using letters, numbers and underscores. This method does not apply to Handle Marketplace names: X says those requests must come from the account that will use the name, and changing away from one makes X reclaim it. Premium Business users are directed to the support tool at handles.x.com for a new account association.

How to Claim Inactive Username on X (Twitter) in 2026

You cannot claim an inactive username on X (Twitter) through any single official button — X has no public reclaim form. Three legitimate routes exist: the paid X Handle Marketplace (launched October 2025, requires Premium), a trademark violation report, or an impersonation report. Released handles re-enter a public pool with no priority for the reporter. Trademark-backed claims succeed most often; expect 1–4 weeks and no guarantees.

X Account Suspended for Inauthentic Behavior: Why?

An X account suspended for inauthentic behavior has been actioned under X's Authenticity policy, dated April 2025, which spans eleven clauses across inauthentic accounts, behaviors and content. Most suspensions that feel like they came from nowhere trace to a third-party automation tool, an unfinished anti-spam challenge, or a classifier error. One appeal form handles all of them, and it must be filed while logged in to the suspended account.

Buy IG Username? How an Instagram Username Buy Fails

Any offer to buy IG username access breaks Instagram's rules, because its Terms bar buying, selling or transferring any part of an account, the username included. Sellers either hand over a whole account or release the name for you to grab, and seller recovery, a Terms review or a payment dispute can reverse either deal. Marketplaces self-report three-letter prices of $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
