Telegram identifies every account by its phone number, not by the handset, the username or an email address. This one rule decides whether you can recover Telegram account without phone number access at all. - A passkey. Added on 12 December 2025, it signs you in with a PIN, Face ID or fingerprint instead of an SMS code, per Telegram's passkey announcement. You can only create one from a device that is already logged in.
- An anonymous +888 number. Sold on Fragment since 6 December 2022, it works with no SIM at all, and the code is read inside Fragment after you connect the TON wallet.

If it says the code went to your other devices, a session you forgot about is still open, often a work laptop or an old tablet. An email prompt means a login email is on file. Still signed in somewhere? Change the number before anything else

Can you recover old Telegram account without phone number years later?
Only when the account still exists and one code channel still reaches you, and by default an account idle for 18 months no longer exists. Telegram's FAQ sets that default, and the setting sits under "If away for" in the Android app's privacy settings (checked September 2026). Recovery-without-a-number scams, and what we won't do

One is the "virtual number", a temporary line that can only create a new account, not restore yours. Another is the "support email", naming addresses such as [email protected] that appear nowhere in Telegram's official FAQ. Here is where the line sits.
